DLA guber candidate promises $50b economy in Enugu

GOVERNORSHIP candidate of the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) in Enugu State, Nnamdi Ugwu, has promised to grow the state’s economy to $50 billion within four years if elected as governor in 2027, stating that the state has the potential to become one of Africa’s leading economic centres.

Ugwu, who spoke over the weekend when he unveiled his manifesto to the people, also said his administration would offer free and compulsory education, create industries and ensure that youths gained employment to discourage social malaise and improve productivity.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of making misleading allegations against the Enugu State Government over a dispute that arose from a town hall venue in Enugu over the weekend.

In a statement, the APC State Campaign Spokesperson and Director of Public Communications, Steve Oruruo, said the NDC was attempting to link the state government to a disagreement over a private commercial incident.

However, Ugwu assured that the $50 billion economy would be achieved through enhanced agriculture and livestock, manufacturing, foreign and local investments, a circular economy, gas and power, human capital development, tourism, and information technology.

The aspirant added that economic diversification, character reformation, and inclusive governance would remain his priorities, and that his administration would introduce an Enugu Character Restoration Charter to rebuild societal values, promote integrity, and restore public confidence in leadership.

Among other promises, the candidate also promised free textbooks, exercise books, and teaching materials; the renovation of classrooms; and the provision of desks, electricity, and toilet facilities in public schools, adding that education is not a privilege but the foundation of a prosperous state.

In the meantime, a viral video on social media over the weekend had accused the state government of directing an event centre management to foil a town hall meeting to be addressed by the NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

However, the APC said findings indicated that an agreement between the facility’s management and a client identified as Dr Sebastian Chuks Eze, who allegedly presented himself as the registrar of the Nigeria Institute of Healthcare Givers and Medical Social Work Practitioners, caused the disagreement.
