Don’t divert N85b French loan to your campaign, Alli warns Makinde

APC governorship candidate in Oyo State, Sharafadeen Alli

Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation has warned Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, against diverting the €55 million (about N85 billion) French Government concessional loan secured for healthcare development to politically motivated projects ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement made available to journalists yesterday in Ibadan, the campaign organisation said the facility was obtained to rehabilitate and upgrade the state’s healthcare infrastructure and should be deployed strictly for that purpose.

It expressed concern that repayment of the loan would become a financial obligation for the state, with repayments expected to commence under the next administration.

The organisation alleged that Makinde had constituted a committee to determine how the funds could be quickly deployed to projects, describing the move as questionable given the proximity of the 2027 elections and the governor’s impending tenure expiration.

The campaign organisation also recalled that the Oyo State House of Assembly approved Makinde’s request in June to raise a N200 billion bond to refinance the state’s debt.

It said the approval, coming alongside the French loan, raised concerns about what it described as hurried financial decisions by the administration ahead of the 2027 elections.

The organisation argued that increased monthly allocations to the state and its 33 local government councils, following the removal of the fuel subsidy, should provide additional resources to address pressing needs without imposing further financial burdens through borrowing.

The campaign organisation said it would continue to scrutinise the deployment of state resources as the 2027 elections approach and hold the Makinde administration accountable for what it described as “curious expenditures.”
