Dozens feared dead in Port Harcourt seven-storey building collapse

Several persons are feared dead and others severely injured following the collapse of a seven storey building in Port Harcourt, Rivers state yesterday.

The building, located along Woji Road, New Government Residential Area (GRA) phase two was under construction before it collapsed at about 6:10pm while the workers were working.  The cause of the collapse, which caused motorists and passersby to scamper for safety, has not been ascertained at the time of this report.

A government official who pleaded anonymity said the cause of the collapse could be due to structural defect. He said the state would carry out a thorough investigation to ascertain the real cause of the accident.

Commissioner of Special Duties, John Bazia who was at the scene of the accident explained that about fifteen persons working at the construction site have been rescued alive but did not specify the number of those dead. Those rescued were still in shock and traumatized and could not say how many persons were working on site before the building collapsed.

Men of the fire service and the police, and health workers were seen at the scene assisting in rescue operations.

Part of Woji street has been condoned off as the search continues.
