Coalition of civil societies organizations under Global Initiatives for Good Governance (GIGG) has demanded an immediate probe of the circumstances surrounding the loss of lives during the Eid el fitri Sallah celebration in Kano.
Led by Malami Abubakar Yahaya Capenta, the coalition, in a statement, on Monday, blamed the disregard for the ban on Durbar by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi for the unfortunate development.
The coalition wondered why Governor Kabir and Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi allegedly openly defied the ban on the horse riding event issued by the Kano state police commissioner on the eve of the Sallah which was a necessary measure to protect lives and properties.
The coalition noted that the “irresponsible act” was not an isolated incident as barely two days into office, Governor Abba Kabir’s administration embarked on needless and brutal demolitions of properties, leading to the deaths of over 25 innocent citizens.

The coalition recalled that recently, the same government carried out another round of demolitions in Rimin Zakara, claiming more lives.
Shockingly, the Governor has publicly declared that he has no regrets for these actions, demonstrating a disturbing lack of empathy and accountability.
Commending the security agencies in Kano State for their professionalism and commitment to maintaining order in the face of escalating tensions, they demanded immediate action to hold Governor Abba Kabir and Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi accountable for their roles in these preventable tragedies.
The coalition insist that Justice must be served to restore public trust and deter further abuse of power.
They thereby called on the people of Kano to remain vigilant and demand accountability from their leaders.
“Our state deserves governance that prioritizes the welfare and safety of its citizens over political grandstanding and reckless displays of authority.
“The Coalition stands firm in demanding: Accountability– A full investigation into the deaths and injuries caused by these unlawful actions. Justice – Prosecution of all officials involved in violating the police ban and endangering lives.
“Transparency – A public explanation from the Kano State Government on its repeated disregard for human lives. We will not relent in our pursuit of justice and good governance. The people of Kano deserve better.”
