A Sharia Court in Kano, yesterday, found eight young men guilty of immoral dressing, in a replica of a women model in public, and sentenced them to three months imprisonment.

The act typical of a modern cross-dressing is offensive under the Kano state Shari’a jurisprudence and insensitive to the cultural norms and tradition of the people in the state.

Although, the sentence came with an option of N10,000 fine, the Shari’a court also committed the culprits to corporal punishment of 10 lashes in the public for discrediting the religious value and sanctity of the people of Kano.

The state’s Hisbah Board had on Monday raided a hotel in the city where the cross-dresser were reportedly having a wedding celebration of one for their leaders.

Spokesperson for the Shari’a enforcement agency, Lawan Fagge, disclosed that the young men were found dressed in female attires dancing in the public before they were arrested and paraded before the Shari’a court.

The Sharia Khadi (Judge), Mallam Sani Tamim Sani Hausawa, said the culprits pleaded guilty to the offences as charged, before the sentences were passed.

Reacting to the judgement, the State acting Commander of the Hisbah, Mujahideen Aminu Abubakar, applauded the court and promised Hisbah’s commitment to sustain the fight against any act of immorality in the state.

Recall that Hisbah recently raided night clubs in the Sabon Gari area of the metropolis where 43 persons, including females were arrested for prostitution, and selling of alcoholic beverages in the state.

Over six million bottles of various brands of alcoholic beverages worth N4 million were confiscated and destroyed by the board in recent times. Marketing and sale of alcohol drinks are prohibited under the State’s Shari’a law.
