Ekiti PDP urges recall of sacked council chairmen, councilors

Ekiti State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gboyega Oguntuase, yesterday urged the state House of Assembly to recall the sacked chairmen and councilors of 16 local councils.

While summoning PDP lawmakers in the House to explain their role in the saga, it threatened to sue the assembly, if the action was not reversed.

In ordering the indefinite suspension, the lawmakers claimed that the action was taken to allow an unimpeded investigation into the councils’ accounts.

Oguntuase, who described the indefinite suspension as a coup against democracy, added that it was also an assault against the judiciary.

He said the Supreme Court had ruled that the tenure of democratically elected chairmen couldn’t be abridged.

The PDP chairman, who spoke to newsmen after an enlarged stakeholders meeting yesterday in Ado Ekiti, said the APC wants to use the suspension to weaken the opposition ahead of 2019 elections.

It stressed that the PDP presidential candidate, Abubakar Atiku would win Ekiti votes, notwithstanding the antics.

According to him, the party would summon, “Our members in the House to explain the role they have played in the criminality. If they are our members, you cannot cloth yourself in the garment of our party and are working against the interest of the party.

“We are alerting the European Union, the United States and the International community that the APC is committed to state violence. We may head to court, if sanity does not prevail by reversing the illegality.”

He alleged that the APC’s plan is to weaken the PDP in the southwest, knowing that they had lost in Ekiti and Osun states, and are weak in the remaining areas.

Oguntuase accused Fayemi of paralysing the local governments, having not given them funds to run the councils’ affairs since he came to office.

“He used the back door; the state assembly to achieve the sacking, as the House had earlier invited the chairmen to bring their account books, which have not been audited.

“The lawmakers pronounced judgment on the chairmen without fair hearing. You can’t pronounce someone guilty without giving him opportunity of defence,” he said.

Oguntuase lamented: “The APC knows that the chairmen are our foot soldiers, so they are doing this to weaken our party. They have carried out a coup against the nearest government to the people of Ekiti.”
