Former member of the House of Representatives for two terms, who represented Bende Federal Constituency in Abia State, Nnenna Elendu-Ukeje, has called for more political positions and opportunities for women in the country.
She said that failure to elect and bring more women into political offices could be likened to a national pandemic that ‘washed’ away women from elective positions.
Ukejei who served Bende in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2015 and is presently seeking to retake the seat in the 2023 election, made the call during a chat with The Guardian.
She said that more of our female folks should be politically accommodated, so as to make their contributions to national discuss for development, stressing that Nigeria could not afford to shut out its female population of about 50% from inclusive political participation, given the immense benefits derivable from their participation in governance”.
She also warned that the situation could progressively get worse if no deliberate action was taken by way of voting for them into elective offices whether by fiat, legislation or policy instrument.
