Expert calls for stronger links between laboratory research, industry

Chinemerem Ozoude

A United States-based Nigerian materials science researcher, Chinemerem Ozoude, has called for stronger collaboration between universities, research institutions and industries to help translate laboratory discoveries into technologies that address practical problems.

Ozoude, said research should be judged not only by what it achieves under laboratory conditions, but by whether those results hold up in the environments where the technology is expected to operate. Working at the intersection of materials research and practical engineering, he said, has taught him that excellent laboratory performance is only the beginning.

He identified further testing, collaboration with potential users and assessment of practical operating requirements as important steps in determining whether promising materials can progress towards industrial application. He pointed to the materials science tetrahedron, which describes the interdependent relationship between processing, structure, properties, and performance, as a framework that every manufacturer must weigh.

Ozoude also emphasised the importance of testing durability, reliability and cost alongside laboratory performance.

Such an assessment, he argued, cannot be left until after results are published. The partnership should begin at the problem-identification stage, with industry experts working alongside researchers to identify real technical challenges, while researchers bring fundamental scientific understanding, advanced characterization, and new approaches to solving them.

These partnerships, he said, help researchers identify performance requirements, recognize the limitations of experimental materials and determine what further work is needed before technologies can be adopted. He called for sustained communication throughout the research process, so that technical findings are tested against practical requirements as they emerge rather than at the end.

The gap between laboratory research and industrial application is a challenge across several fields of materials science. Experimental results can establish whether a material performs under specified conditions, but additional evidence is needed to determine whether it can operate consistently on a larger scale.
