Workers in Nigeria who desire not to experience financial strain and loss of purpose during retirement must approach that stage of their lives prepared.
This was the submission of experts during the lunch of the book, Effective Planning for Retirement as an Entrepreneur (A Strategic Outlook), written by Air Commodore Taofiki Oladega (rtd), PhD, held at the Nigerian Army Resettlement Centre, Oshodi, Lagos, recently.
Describing retirement as a phase that every worker must inevitably face, the Chairman of the occasion, Air Vice Marshal Ebenezer Olayinka Alade (rtd), observed that “unfortunately, many approach it unprepared, resulting in financial strain, health challenges and loss of purpose.”
He stated that the book addresses these concerns directly and responsibly, noting that the book launch was a celebration of knowledge, foresight and responsible living.
“It represents a commitment to enlightenment, preparation and societal development,” he said.
Alade, who is former Commandant, Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna, observed that the publication was timely and relevant, “especially within our socio-economic environment where issues such as delayed pension payments, inflation and limited post-retirement support systems persist.”
“By combining retirement planning with entrepreneurship, the author provides a practical framework for ensuring financial stability, personal fulfillment and continued relevance after active service. This approach is commendable and forward-thinking,” he noted.
He commended Oladega for the courage, discipline and insight required to produce this book.
“This book reflects not only academic depth but also real-life understanding of the challenges faced by workers and retirees.
“I encourage everyone present here today—workers, senior military officers, retirees, professionals, and policymakers—to see this book as a guide and a call to action. Let us begin to plan early, live responsibly and embrace lifelong productivity. This book deserves to be read, discussed and applied,” he added.
On his part, the book reviewer, Prof. MOB Mohammed, noted that retirement remains one of the most critical transitions in the life of every worker. He also stated that unfortunately many individuals approach it with fear, uncertainty and inadequate preparation.
According to him, the book confronts that reality directly and offers practical, well-structured and context-specific solutions, particularly within the Nigerian environment.
Mohammed, who is the Director, Centre for Nigerian Studies, Lagos State University and Chairman, Honeyland Groups of Schools, also noted that the book was timely, relevant and well-researched.
“It provides answers to some of the most pressing questions surrounding retirement in Nigeria and offers practical solutions that can improve lives, strengthen families and contribute to national development.
“I strongly recommend this book to individuals, institutions and policymakers. It deserves a place on the shelf of every worker who desires a secure, productive and fulfilling retirement,” he said.
