Fagbemi urges responsible social media use for national development

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has called for responsible citizenship, particularly in the deployment of information technology tools in the digital age.

Speaking at a Social Media Summit held in Abuja on Wednesday, Fagbemi represented by his media aide, Kamarudeen Ogundele, stressed the need for citizens to exercise caution in their use of social media, noting that while freedom of speech is guaranteed, it must not be abused.

The summit, themed “Harnessing the Power of Social Media for National Development,” brought together leaders, stakeholders, and social media influencers to discuss the role of digital platforms in shaping Nigeria’s future.

Fagbemi noted the growing impact of social media in Nigeria, saying that while the government has ensured freedom of speech, citizens must use these freedoms judiciously.

He pointed out that platforms like X, Facebook, and Instagram have become avenues for youths to showcase talents, drive entrepreneurial ventures, and boost the country’s economy.

“Social media is a tool that can make or mar a country,” he cautioned, stressing that responsible use is key to ensuring that Nigeria continues on the path of growth and development.

The AGF pointed out the various ways social media can contribute to national development, including promoting e-commerce, creating job opportunities, fostering innovation, and marketing tourism.

He drew parallels with global success stories, such as India’s Digital India program and Kenya’s M-Pesa, urging Nigeria to continue leveraging digital tools for economic growth and governance reforms

Fagbemi, however, also pointed out the challenges posed by social media, including misinformation, cyber threats, and the digital divide. He called for collaboration between the government, civil society, and private sector stakeholders to create an enabling environment for social media-driven national development.

According to him, while freedom of speech is upheld, no one should infringe on the rights of others or use social media to de-market the country for political gain.

“Political differences should not make us de-market our country on the international stage. Only unpatriotic citizens or leaders will choose to do so,” he declared, urging Nigerians to exercise caution and patriotism in their online engagements.

Fagbemi, who hailed the convener, Earl Osaro Onaiwu, for his contributions to the country, acknowledged his past roles as Director General of the Nigeria Governors Forum and PDP Governors Forum.

The AGF commended Onaiwu for stepping away from partisan politics to focus on community development issues.
