The Provost of the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, Ibadan, Dr. Olatunde Owosibo, has urged Nigerians to key into President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the sector by embracing farming to reduce food insecurity in the country.

Owosibo made the call while giving scholarships to two students of His Heritage Home in Ibadan to study Agriculture.

The provost said the gesture was to encourage the youths and Nigerians to take into agriculture, saying it was in line with the vision of President Tinubu.

He maintained that agriculture is critical to the survival and development of the country.

He said: “He (Tinubu) is encouraging those of us in the field and as many as possible to go into agriculture. Without agriculture, industries can never grow and hunger cannot leave our society.

“Agriculture is the way to go. We can see the way things are going our society. In fact, all of us will remain stacked naked without food in our stomachs. So, we have to go back to the farm.

“We are encouraging everyone, even if you are a medical doctor, you must have a farm and go to farm at your leisure time. This will make us have enough food. With this step, there will be food security, and the issue of hunger here and there will be removed from our society.”

The provost also urged the youths to study agricultural courses in higher institutions.

He maintained that studying the courses would make them self-reliant and reduce unemployment.

He said: “Studying agriculture is the best thing to do now. When you study agriculture, you can start something on your own. You don’t have to look for a white collar job. If you study animal science, you can start by rearing chicken, goat, or sheep. You can go into cattle production and ranching.”
