It was a day of nostalgia, culture, and reflection as family, friends, scholars, and literary enthusiasts gathered for the public presentation of a book, titled: “The House on Broad Street: A Journey of a Family, Street and CBD Through the Times.”
Author of the book, David Olusoga Fayemi, implored Lagosians and Nigerians to preserve family traditions and history, especially those things that define them.
He, however, made a case for the need for good record keeping, as well as preservation of important artefacts and structures for property.
The Book Reviewer, Olasupo Sasore (SAN), praised the scholarship and research that went into the effort of producing the book.
He also lauded Fayemi’s impressive chronicling of colonial Lagos up to modern times, saying that the book, The House on Broad Street: A Journey of a Family, Street and CBD Through the Times, is not just about a building or a street, from colonial administrators to street vendors, it chronicles the passage of time, the cultural blend, the architectural heritage, among others.
Chairman of the event, Maj.-Gen. Tajudeen Olarenwaju said that the launch was more than a literary event, but also a celebration of heritage, resilience, and identity, the values that continue to define Lagos and its people.
Also, the Chief Launcher, Dr Emmanuel Aderemi Awode, who was represented by Taiwo Olawale Lateef, described his mother, Delphine Awode, nee Adesigbin, as the oldest living member of the fourth generation of the Oluwole Layeni Family.
