The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has facilitated free eye surgery for its former chairman, Comrade Ndamadu Sule, in fulfillment of its renewed commitment to members’ welfare under the leadership of Comrade Grace Ike.
The surgery, conducted on August 28, 2025, at the Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja, ended years of visual impairment for the veteran journalist and significantly improved his quality of life.
Expressing deep gratitude, Comrade Sule described the intervention as an act of compassion and true leadership.
“By December 22, it would be seven years since my struggle began. I thank them for spending resources to help me. I remain deeply grateful to the NUJ-FCT Council for their support,” Sule said.
Sule offered prayers for continued blessings on Chairman Grace Ike and her team, urging journalists to support her administration.
In line with her campaign promise to prioritize members’ health, two other journalists, Nicholas Ngozichukwu of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and Kamoru Odunlami of ITV, have also been scheduled for free eye surgery at Nizamiye Hospital following medical assessments.
Those screened but found unfit for immediate surgery were given medication and follow-up care until they became eligible for the procedure.
Beneficiaries praised the council for its sustained support, describing the initiative as a major step toward improving journalist welfare.
The NUJ-FCT Council’s partnership with Nizamiye Hospital marks the first time in recent years that members are receiving free medical interventions, reinforcing the union’s commitment to building a healthier and more humane media environment in the nation’s capital.
