FG, NANS urge vigilance to curb arms proliferation in Northeast

The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have called for collective vigilance to curb the proliferation of arms and weapons in the insurgency-affected North East.

The North East Zonal Coordinator of the Centre, Rear Admiral Abubakar Mohammed (rtd.), spoke at the inauguration of the Zone E NANS executive members in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.

He stressed the importance of curbing the use of illicit small arms and light weapons among youths and students to promote peace and stability in the region.

Mohammed noted the Centre’s ongoing efforts to engage stakeholders, including youths and students, in combating the spread of small arms and light weapons.

He underscored that the recovery of the region from insurgency hinges on successfully mopping up illegal arms and weapons.

Established in 2021, the Centre’s mandate includes addressing the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Nigeria, coordinating their regulation, and preventing their illicit trade.

In his paper presentation, Mohammed stressed that curbing the use of illicit small arms and light weapons among youths and students is critical, as their proliferation exacerbates violence and instability in the region.

He further noted that engaging with youths and students is essential for promoting peace and stability, as they are vital to the region’s future development.

The newly elected NANS Zone E (North East) executives pledged their support for the fight against illicit arms within their institutions and society.

They stressed the importance of continued collaboration and expressed gratitude for the Centre’s efforts in promoting tranquility.

Earlier, Mr. Umar Afkawa, the newly sworn-in Coordinator of NANS in the North East, stated that his vision is to enhance the welfare of students in the zone while supporting efforts to curb the spread of illicit arms among students.
