FG reiterates commitment to economic stability, improved quality of life

VP Kashim Shettima

The vice president , Senator Kashim Shettima, has assured Nigerians that the government, through its agenda, is implementing targeted interventions to stabilise the economy, expand opportunities, and improve the quality of life for all Nigerians.

He maintained that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains steadfast in its efforts to reposition the Nigerian economy through bold reforms aimed at reducing poverty, attracting investment, and creating an enabling environment.

Shettima revealed that the country is undergoing major reforms aimed at repositioning the economy and optimising revenue generation through improved tax systems.

The Vice President made these known on Tuesday in his keynote address while declaring open the 2025 Retreat for Newly Inaugurated Members of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), held in Uyo.

Shettima, who was represented by Ibrahim Natagwandu, Technical Adviser to the VP on Public Debt Management and Revenue Mobilisation, urged the Members and staff of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to rededicate themselves to the aspirations of the government and the people by upholding the principles of transparency, equity, and service excellence in the discharge of their duties.

The VP commended efforts of the Chairman of the RMAFC, whom he said has been actively engaging relevant authorities to secure the necessary approvals for enhanced funding of the Commission— a proactive step the VP said is both timely and strategic, as improved funding is essential to strengthen the Commission’s operational capacity, enhance data-driven decision-making, and ensure the effective discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.

He assured the Commission that the administration recognises these efforts and is committed to supporting initiatives that enable the Commission to function optimally.

Shettima likewise commended the leadership of the Commission for initiating the engagement, which is timely, strategic, and in alignment with our administration’s vision for fiscal prudence, equity, and sustainable development.

He revealed that the retreat will offer participants the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Commission’s mandate, internal structures, intergovernmental dynamics, and evolving fiscal realities, as well as a platform to align with the policy direction of the Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in areas of revenue optimisation, economic diversification, and prudent public expenditure.

His words: “This retreat is more than an orientation; it is a call to national service at a time when our country is undergoing major reforms aimed at repositioning the economy and optimizing our revenue generation through improved tax systems. The RMAFC occupies a critical place in this journey, as its work directly impacts the fiscal health and cohesion of our Federation. Guided by the administration’s Agenda, the government is implementing targeted interventions to stabilise the economy, expand opportunities, and improve the quality of life for all Nigerians. In this regard, I urge the Members and staff of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission to rededicate themselves to the aspirations of the government and the people by upholding the principles of transparency, equity, and service excellence in the discharge of their duties.”

Shettima urged Members of the Commission to view their appointment not as a privilege, but as a responsibility to uphold transparency, fairness, and efficiency in the discharge of their constitutional mandate.

He described RMAFC members as custodians of a system that ensures equity among the three tiers of government and promotes fiscal balance across the Federation.

He thanked the government of Akwa Ibom State.
