The Class of 2005 of Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC), Calabar, has called on the Federal Government to urgently address the state of dilapidated infrastructure in unity schools across the country.
Speaking on Tuesday at the assembly ground, during the presentation of scholarships to eight outstanding graduating students as part of activities marking their 20th anniversary, a member of the alumni, Abenmire Adi, lamented the decay in facilities within many federal unity colleges.
“This school molded us into the women we have become today, but we cannot ignore the fact that across unity schools, the rate of dilapidation is worrisome.
“We are calling on the Federal Government to pay closer attention to infrastructure in these institutions so that future generations can continue to benefit from a solid foundation.” She said.
Adi also urged other alumni sets to contribute to the development of their alma mater. “What we have done today is not just for these eight girls, but for the entire school community. Education is the true legacy, and it is our duty to support it in whatever way we can,” she added.
As part of the celebration, the Class of 2005 awarded scholarships covering the payment of West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) fees for the eight best graduating students drawn from arms A to H.
Earlier, the Vice President of the Class of 2005, Kedei Ubi, explained that the scholarship initiative was part of their resolve to give back to the institution that shaped their formative years.
“We are proud to present scholarships to the eight best graduating students across all arms of the class. Our hope is that this encourages them to keep working hard, believe in themselves, and never forget the value of education,” she said.
The Principal and Director of FGGC Calabar, Mrs. Roki Mercy, applauded the alumni for their generosity, describing the scholarships as a worthy investment in the future of the students. She encouraged other sets to emulate the spirit of service and commitment demonstrated by the 2005 group.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Head Girl Jacob Greatness Anthony expressed gratitude to the alumni, promising that the awardees would strive to uphold the values of excellence.
“This scholarship is more than a reward; it is a challenge for us to aim higher and work harder. We promise not to let you down,” she said.
