Firm rebrands, deepens commitment to energy access

BAOBAB+, a leading last-mile distributor of affordable solar solutions, has rebranded as Izili, marking a new phase in its mission to deliver reliable energy and digital services to underserved communities across Africa.

The transition follows BioLite’s acquisition of a majority stake in April 2025, signalling a renewed focus on delivering end-user impact. Speaking at a press briefing on Monday to announce the change, the Group Chief Executive Officer, Kolawole Osinowo, said the name change signals the company’s evolution after Baobab Group divested fully to concentrate on microfinance.

Osinowo said: “Izili for us means limitless, because the opportunities to solve the problems of energy access, energy reliability, and affordability are indeed limitless. The name ‘Izili’ captures our ambition to light up every home and link every entrepreneur to opportunities.”

He stressed that more than 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa still lack access to electricity, with Nigeria alone accounting for over 90 million.

“While this is a challenge for many, we see it as an opportunity to make a difference. Reliable energy access changes lives, from extending trading hours for small businesses to helping school children study at night, and driving digital and financial inclusion,” he said.

According to him, the company, which has been operating in Nigeria since 2021 and in countries such as Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, and Madagascar since 2015, plans to scale its operations to 10 African countries in the coming years. Izili currently reaches over 600,000 households and aims to quadruple that number through product expansion and partnerships.
