Former Ondo SDP guber candidate Akingboye dies at 60

The former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2024 Ondo State governorship election, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye (OBA), is dead.

Akingboye, 60, who decamped from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to SDP prior to the governorship election, died in the early hours of Wednesday at his residence in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lagos State.

A renowned businessman and philanthropist, the deceased was the Chief Executive Officer of Benshore Maritime and Clog Oil Systems, and President of WeAfrica Group.

While confirming the development, his media aide Oyeniyi Iwakun described his late boss as “a beacon of hope to countless people whose passing is a devastating loss to both the business and political communities in Nigeria.”

SDP in the state, which also expressed deep sorrow over the death of its former governorship candidate, stated that Akingboye was a remarkable leader, philanthropist, and business tycoon who dedicated his life to serving the people of Ondo State.

The SDP said: “It is with profound sadness that the Social Democratic Party, Ondo State chapter, announces the passing of Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, our beloved governorship candidate for the 2024 Ondo State election.

“Akingboye, popularly known as OBA, was a remarkable leader, philanthropist, and business tycoon who dedicated his life to serving the people of Ondo State.

“During his campaign, Akingboye shared his vision for a brighter future for Ondo State, focusing on good governance, social justice, and sustainable development. His leadership and passion inspired many, and his legacy will continue to shape the future of our state.”

The party added that his passing was a huge loss not only to his family and associates but also to the entire SDP family across the state.

It said, “We pray for the repose of his soul and offer condolences to his family, friends, and supporters. May his memory inspire us to continue striving for a better Ondo State.”
