Forum mourns victims of Mokwa flood, calls for emergency intervention

The Niger Christian Youth Forum (NCYF) has expressed deep sorrow over the recent flood disaster that devastated Mokwa town in Niger State, resulting in the loss of lives, destruction of homes and farmlands, and the displacement of numerous families.

In a statement issued to journalists in Minna, the spokesperson of the forum, Joshua Ndace, extended heartfelt condolences to the victims and families affected by the flood.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with every affected family. We stand in solidarity with the people of Mokwa during this difficult time,” the statement read.

The forum commended the swift response and intervention by notable individuals, including the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris Malagi; Senators Peter Ndalikali Jiya and Mohammed Sani Musa; and Honourable Joshua Audu Gana, who represents Lavun, Mokwa, and Edati Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

“These immediate interventions reflect true leadership in times of crisis. We urge them to continue using their offices to advocate for increased federal attention and to facilitate the delivery of relief materials to the affected communities,” the forum noted.

The NCYF also called on both the Niger State Government and relevant federal agencies, particularly the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to act urgently by providing more relief materials, implementing rehabilitation plans, and introducing long-term infrastructure strategies to prevent future occurrences.

The forum highlighted environmental degradation caused by the unchecked growth of the charcoal industry as a contributing factor to increased flooding and emphasized the need for climate-responsive action.

“The effects of climate change, worsened by environmental abuse such as the rampant expansion of the charcoal industry, have led to severe water runoff and flooding. Sustainable solutions must now be a priority,” the statement added.

Calling for collective action, the NCYF urged religious bodies, civil society organizations, and well-meaning Nigerians to support those affected.

“This is a time to show compassion, generosity, and unity,” the forum appealed. “As an organization committed to the welfare of Niger State youths and communities, we reaffirm our readiness to collaborate with all stakeholders to provide both spiritual and practical support to the victims.”
