Nigerian motorists are facing difficulties applying for their vehicles’ tinted glass permits, as the registration website continues to malfunction.
An applicant told The Guardian that after several failed attempts to register on Saturday, said the portal rejected both Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) and National Identity Numbers (NIN), even when they were complete and accurate.
“The website is rejecting BVN and NIN even when they are complete and accurate,” the applicant wrote in a WhatsApp chat with The Guardian, attaching screenshots of the error pages.
After numerous attempts on Saturday evening, he said the website eventually refused to open, attributing the problem to what appeared to be a server error.
The applicant also claimed that someone who visited the data centre for biometric capture after registering online was extorted ₦10,000.
According to him, motorists who already have tint permits are also being told to register again.
Another check on the registration portal on Monday showed that the option to select registration for the tint permit was inactive, preventing applicants from proceeding.
In June, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun extended the grace period for enforcing the tinted glass permit requirement to August 12, 2025.
The decision followed public concerns and feedback regarding the reactivation of the digital application process. The extension was aimed at facilitating further improvements to the process, ensuring that no citizen is unfairly disadvantaged.
The police said they were actively improving both physical and digital application options, introducing enhanced verification mechanisms, and streamlining procedures to minimise delays and inconvenience.
