The Federal Government is to upgrade 10,000 primary healthcare centres (PHCs) nation-wide as part of efforts to make health services affordable to the people.

Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, who made the disclosure at the 11th yearly Scientific Conference and All Fellows’ Congress organised by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, said the present administration was working with the states to institute a well-integrated health system.

Adewole stressed that a situation whereby citizens bypass the primary healthcare system for the tertiary level could not sustain equity and efficiency.

Represented by the Chief Medical Director (CMD), University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Prof. Temitope Alonge, the minister said in the next five years, government would renovate and make fully functional the 10,000 PHCs.

The event was attended by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and other senior medical practitioners.
