Governor Oborevwori flags Off Warri–Sapele–Benin road reconstruction

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Tuesday flagged off the reconstruction of the Warri–Sapele–Benin Road, a key transport corridor linking the state’s industrial hub to neighbouring Edo State.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held at 3:15 p.m. on October 14, 2025, marked the formal commencement of a 10-kilometre dual carriageway project stretching from the Spare Parts Market U-turn in Effurun to just beyond Ohore Junction before the Omenta Bridge.

The project, valued at ₦35.7 billion, has been awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), with the federal government releasing 25 per cent—₦8.9 billion as mobilisation funds.

The reconstruction was initiated at the request of the Federal Ministry of Works and aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda’s infrastructure drive.

Speaking at the event, Governor Oborevwori said the decision to undertake the project was guided by the need to serve residents who rely on the route for commerce and daily movement.

“As a government that puts the people first, we took up this federal road project because its users are our people,” he stated. “The rehabilitation of this critical route will improve mobility, boost productivity, and enhance safety for thousands of commuters.”

The governor noted that the deteriorated state of the highway had caused severe congestion and economic losses, especially for transporters and traders moving goods between Warri, Sapele, Benin, and adjoining communities.

He assured that the state would ensure strict supervision of the contractor to meet quality and delivery standards.

The Warri–Sapele–Benin Road is one of the busiest in the South-South, serving as a key gateway between the Niger Delta and other parts of southern Nigeria. Its reconstruction is expected to ease travel time, facilitate logistics, and stimulate regional trade.

Delta State’s intervention in the federal road follows similar state-led infrastructure partnerships across the country, as subnational governments align with federal efforts to modernise major highways under the Renewed Hope infrastructure programme.
