Govt begins operations on Port Harcourt-Maiduguri railway

Federal Government has commenced operations on the Port-Harcourt-Aba stretch of the rehabilitation of the 1443 km Port-Harcourt, Maiduguri narrow gauge rail project.

The development is part of the intensified drive by the Federal Government to facilitate trade, enhance mobility, and accessibility and ensure connectivity between the southern parts of the country to the North-Eastern part of the country.


The Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, on behalf of the Federal Government, flagged off the commencement of the commercial services on the 62.0 kilometres Port-Harcourt, Aba corridor, yesterday.

The Minister in his address at the Port Harcourt Station, said the Ministry was in talks with an investor on retrofitting the locomotive from diesel to CNG to further bring down the cost of transportation.

He said: “We give God the glory that we are here to commission the train service from Port Harcourt to Aba.

“And to thank the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and commitment to the Ministry of Transportation out of his desire to bring succour to the people of this great country.”
