A grassroots support group, KOHmmunity, has begun mobilisation to actualise the governorship ambition of Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, ahead of the 2027 elections.

The group, which cuts across the metropolis, from the tech clusters of Yaba and university communities in Akoka to major markets in Alaba and Lagos Island, said it is adopting a citizen-driven approach to political engagement.

In a statement by one of its conveners, Dr Lanre Ajibade, KOHmmunity said it operates outside conventional campaign structures, noting that over 5,000 residents have already registered on its platform. He described the initiative as an organic, bottom-up movement bringing together professionals, artisans, students and community leaders.

Ajibade added that the group has expanded rapidly in recent weeks, with decentralised cells emerging across wards and digital platforms.

According to him, traders, students and young professionals are driving advocacy within their respective spaces through market interactions, campus engagements and online conversations.

He said the mobilisation is rooted in concerns about Lagos’ development trajectory and the need for experienced leadership to sustain ongoing reforms.

Also speaking, a member of the group, Mrs Folashade Ajayi, who coordinates a KOHmmunity cell in Idumota, said the initiative reflects a shift in civic participation among residents.

“We are not waiting for politicians to seek our votes. We are organising because government policies directly affect our businesses and livelihoods,” she said.

Ajayi added that while formal campaigns are yet to begin, grassroots movements are already shaping early political narratives ahead of the election cycle.

Meanwhile, Hamzat is emerging as a strong contender for the ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), amid growing permutations within the party.

His profile is strengthened by his role in the current administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his long-standing involvement in Lagos governance. Having served as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure before becoming deputy governor in 2019, he is widely regarded as a key figure in policy execution and infrastructure development.

Party sources note that the Lagos APC has historically favoured continuity, often elevating candidates already embedded within the system—an advantage that could work in Hamzat’s favour.

His loyalty to the party structure is also seen as a major asset, particularly his decision to step down his governorship ambition in 2018 to support Sanwo-Olu, a move viewed as reinforcing party cohesion.

In addition, his low-profile political style and broad acceptability across party blocs may position him as a consensus candidate in the event of competing interests.

However, the race remains open, with other prominent figures, including Femi Gbajabiamila, Tokunbo Abiru and Akinwunmi Ambode, also being mentioned as potential aspirants.

Despite the uncertainties, Hamzat’s experience, party loyalty and technocratic background continue to position him as a formidable contender in the unfolding contest. He is also said to enjoy the backing of some members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), led by Tajudeen Olusi.
