Group laments collapse of ₦2.8b Ogoni water projects

Ogoni Liberation Initiative (OLI)

The group, Ogoni Liberation Initiative, OLI, has raised an alarm over the Ebubu Eleme and Gwara water projects executing at the cost of ₦2,873, 820, 786 that collapsed after the five days of commissioning and have still remained unfixed till date.

The failed two water projects were handled by Surez Global Resources Limited, and Duliz Dredging and Construction Ltd with the sum of
₦1,799,151,565 for Gwara Water Project, while Ebubu Eleme Water Project was executed at the cost of ₦1,074,669,221.

Its President/CEO, Dr. Fabeke Douglas, in a statement made available to The Guardian in Abuja, explaining that   Ogoni water projects collapsed have become a pattern of failure and waste that must end, not only in Ogoniland but also in the country.

“While the Minister of Environment prepares to visit Ogoni again to commission yet another borehole project running into billions of Naira, at the invitation of his partners, we are compelled to remind him of abandoned promises and his pass failures,”Douglas said.

The OLI President further explained that “in the coming days, we shall release further details on these companies, how the contracts were awarded, and how the funds were disbursed.”

He therefore maintained that in any environment where public accountability and the rights of citizens are respected, both the Minister and the Project Coordinator would have resigned by now over this monumental failure.

“To plan another visit to Ogoni to commission new borehole, while previous multi-billion Naira projects lie in ruins, shows that looting has become the culture. There is no problem. Our team will be on ground to receive the Minister and to ask him to account for his ‘good works’ in Ogoniland.”

According to Douglas, the people of Ogoni deserve clean, functional water, not billboards of abandoned projects. We have numerous abandoned water project across Ogoni communities fully paid for,but contractors didn’t receive the full payment. The day of accountability is drawing closer.
