Group, Ondo community lament over 10 years outage
A group of youths under the aegis of Young Democratic Party (YDP) has urged the Federal Government and Ondo State government to expedite action on restoring electricity to the riverine communities of Ondo State.
The state secretary of the party, Mr. Deji Ebisemiju, in a statement made available to journalists in Akure, said government must stop being insensitive and indifferent to the yearnings of the people.
Meanwhile, thousands of youths from Ilaje Local Government Area had protested against 10 years of power outage in the South Senatorial District of Ondo State, lamenting utter marginalisation of the riverine area by the state government.
The youths, under the aegis of Ilaje Advancement Forum (IAF), gathered at Igbokoda, the headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area at the weekend, chanting “Ko sina, ko sibo,” meaning ‘no light, no election.’
Ebisemiju decried the age-long neglect of the communities by government and the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), saying total power outage is responsible for the misfortunes of the area. He stressed that it is compulsory for the people to hold the government and their representatives responsible for whatever situation they find themselves.
According to him, “the masses have the right to demand renegotiation of social contract between the government and the people of Ilaje Local Government Area, an oil producing area of the state. We are the local government producing the largest chunk of money to the Federal Government through our oil resources. We surrender everything we have for the government under social contract to take care of us.”
He added that projects initiated by the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) and Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) were abandoned in the areas.
