Group seeks zero tolerance policy, prosecution of ‘randy’ lecturer

Some Nigerians, under the aegis of Concerned Citizens, have called for justice and accountability for the University of Lagos (UNILAG)  student, allegedly assaulted sexually by a lecturer in the institution.

The petition is directed to the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, the Commissioner of Police (CP), Idowu Owohunwa, and the state Ministry of Education.

In the petition, through Change.org, which has attracted 74 signatories, the petitioners lamented the alleged incident involving Dr Kadiri Akeem Babalola, in the department of Botany, accused of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old female undergraduate student in his office.

The group said such heinous acts should not go unpunished, while it is imperative that justice is served swiftly and decisively. The petitioners called on the authorities and relevant stakeholders to take immediate action to ensure justice is served and that such incidents are prevented in the future.

Specifically, the group called for a thorough, comprehensive, and transparent investigation into the allegations against Babalola. It said the investigation should be conducted promptly, and all evidence, including any admission made by the accused, should be examined.

The group also called on the institution to adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual harassment and misconduct by faculty members or staff.
This, it noted, should include revisiting and strengthening the institution’s existing policies and procedures for addressing such incidents.

“We urge UNILAG to support the survivor by ensuring her physical and psychological well-being throughout the legal process.

“We call for accountability within UNILAG’s administration. If it is found that any university officials are aware of previous misconduct by Babalola and failed to take action, such a person should be held accountable.
