Gunmen abduct ex- Accountant General, three others in Calabar/Ikom highway
Gunmen have abducted a former Accountant General Cross River State, Mrs. Rose Bassey and three others along Calabar/Ikom highway.
The Uyanga-Ikomita axis of the Calabar-Ikom highway has become notorious as kidnapping activities take place on daily basis.
Mrs. Bassey was abducted at about 5:00p.m. on Tuesday on her way back from farm at Ekpri Iko, after Iwuru in Biase Local Council of the state.
It was also gathered that a popular cleric in the state, Evangelist Edim Omin was also shot at, but luckily escaped with bullet wounds and was receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
A commuter who was in another vehicle that escaped being abducted told The Guardian that the kidnappers laid siege to the road and when the vehicle that was conveying the passengers approached, they started shooting, thereby forcing the driver to stop.
The abduction was coming barely 24 hours after the State Police Command announced deployment of tactical teams, including the Anti-Cultism and Kidnapping Squad to that axis of the highway to safeguard motorists and commuters.
When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, Irene Ugbo confirmed the abduction, adding that the Command is working hard to ensure they are released.
“It is a sad reality for us and as I speak with you, the Commissioner of Police is heading to that axis to access situation of things himself,” she stated.
