Gunmen kidnap council chairman, kill two in Rivers State

The Rivers State Police Command, yesterday, confirmed the abduction of Chairman of Okrika Council, Philemon Kingoli, just as gunmen killed two persons in Port Harcourt.

Kidnappers seized Kingoli in the early hours of Wednesday along the Peter Odili Road in Port Harcourt City Council of the state. His kidnap is coming few weeks after gunmen abducted the Traditional Ruler of Ikuru town, HRM King Aaron Miller Ikuru in Andoni Council and a lecturer at the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies, University of Port Harcourt, Dr. Jones Ayauwo, who is also king Ikuru’s kinsman.

They have, however, regained freedom with a trending video from the monarch’s kidnappers, in which they urged politicians and traditional rulers to enthrone peace in Andoni, saying their failure to ensure peace and pave way for employment of the youths necessitated their action.

But the motive for Kingoli’s abduction was yet unknown as the gunmen were yet to establish contact with members of the victim’s family.
State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nnamdi Omoni, who confirmed Kingoli’s kidnap, said the command was making effort to free Kingoli from the kidnappers’ den.

Commissioner of Police (CP), Friday Eboka, has directed all tactical commanders in the state to move in immediately and ensure his release.

Meanwhile, two persons were shot dead on Wednesday night around Victoria and Bende streets in the old Port Harcourt Township in what eyewitnesses described as a suspected gang attack.

They said: “We heard heavy gun shots and later found the lifeless bodies of two young men on the street, as residents ran for cover for fearof further attacks.”
