The House of Representatives is investigating the circumstances surrounding the burning by security operatives of a vessel allegedly deployed for oil theft in the Niger Delta.

The lower legislative chamber decried that the economic sabotage had tarried, robbed the government of good income and degraded the environment.

Representative of Etinan/Nsit Ibom/Nsit Ubium Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State, Onofiok Akpan Luke, who raised the issue under matters of urgent public importance during plenary, yesterday, observed that oil theft was making Nigeria lose 470,000 barrels daily and $700 million monthly, citing figures from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited.

“There have been several new reports that high-powered technology is applied in the stealing of crude oil, particularly at Forcados line and transported through a four-kilometre pipeline to a platform in the sea with as much as 200 barrels of crude oil reported to have been stolen every day from the location since 2014,” he stated.

The Green Chamber appreciated the responsiveness of the private security firm, Tanita Security Services (TSS), in curbing the menace, which led to the arrest of a vessel and handing it out to the agency.

But the reported destruction of the said vessel by security operatives instead of preserving same as evidence for prosecution purposes remains a disturbing issue to the lawmakers

The House then insisted that an investigation be carried out to unravel the reasons for the demolition.

This is even as the Pan Nigeria Professionals (PNP), yesterday, lauded NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, for tackling the economic sabotage in the oil-rich region, implementing the national gas expansion programme, AKK pipeline project and instilling transparency in the company.

It noted that the conferment of the Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR) national honour on Kyari by President Muhammadu Buhari would encourage public office holders that outstanding performance will be rewarded.

In a statement signed by its chairman, Dr. Yusuf Ahmadu Danbatta, the group said the attainment of a 40,000 billion barrel reserve under his watch was a product of focus and commitment besides efforts to revive refineries and collaborate with security agencies to clamp down on saboteurs.
