A prominent Ibadan elder, Olanrewaju Adewolu, the Founder of Bola Immaculate Group of Schools and Chairman, Ibadan Foundation Scholarship Board, Chief (Mrs) Bola Doherty, and a scholar at the Federal University of Agriculture {FUNAAB}, Dr. Kazeem Olayiwola, have urged students to shun internet fraud a.k.a ‘yahoo-yahoo’, warning that anyone involved in the anti-social act will end up in jail.
They spoke during the presentation of cheques worth over N1 million by Ibadan Foundation (IBF) to 22 indigent students of Ibadan origin for the 2023/2024 academic session.
The recipients, comprising 14 tertiary and eight secondary school students, won the bursary based on their academic performance records and character in their various institutions of learning.
At the presentation ceremony held at the Foundation’s office, Onireke, Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, Doherty disclosed that a cheque of N50, 000 was presented to each of the students.
The Chairman, Ibadan Foundation Scholarship Board stated that the Ibadan Foundation established in 1989, engaged in the voluntary service of empowering able and talented students to realize their full educational potential.
Doherty, who is also the treasurer of IBF, said: ‘’ We are in a jet age whereby talents are being appreciated. If you are ‘yahoo-yahoo’ boys, you are going to do it for a while but you will end up in jail. But if you focus on your studies, a brighter future is guaranteed. Values and virtues are being given to those who have talents’’.
On his part, Adewolu, who urged the beneficiaries to be good ambassadors of Ibadan, advised them to shun ‘yahoo yahoo’.
He said: ‘’I am always happy to see young ones doing well. Parents must take care of their children to guarantee a better future for them. So, I beg you to be studious. Don’t engage in any unwholesome act. Jail is the end of those who engage in ‘yahoo yahoo’.
Anywhere you go, you must be good ambassadors of Ibadan.”
On his part, Dr. Olayiwola said: ‘’Keep on the hard work; continue to be studious, don’t go down. The scholarship will be withdrawn if you go down in performance.”
Responding on behalf of parents of the beneficiaries, Mrs Bisade Ajibola expressed gratitude for the gesture assuring that students would live up to expectations in their studies and make the foundation proud.
