Igbinedion varsity names college after Goodluck Jonathan
Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has pledged his readiness to support the Igbinedion University Okada (IUO) in the areas of collaboration and assistance.
Speaking during a visit and formalisation ceremony of the naming of the College of Arts and Social Sciences of the university after him, Jonathan appreciated the management of the institution for deeming it fit to honour him.
He said the gesture was an attestation to how dear he was to the university, noting that naming a college after a person was the highest honour a university could bestow on an individual.
He, however, promised to meet the Dean of the College before the university’s next convocation with a view to identifying areas of collaboration and assistance.
In his remark at the ceremony the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, noted that the naming of the College of Arts and Social Sciences after the former President was based on excellence, his outstanding performance as President of the country and his humility.
Speaking, Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Lawrence Ezemonye, said former President Jonathan was found deserving of the honour because of his invaluable contribution to the development of the country, with particular reference to his democratic ideals that drew national and international accolades.
“The fundamental essence of today’s activities cannot be overemphasised, having waited for 21 years, having gone through due diligence and having receive the blessings of our chancellor.
“This flag is a symbol of authority. Without this flag, the College of Arts and Social Sciences cannot perform convocation ceremony and that is why we find it expedient that this visit is concluded before the next convocation,” he said.
