Immigration boss cautions officers on graft

The Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Muhammad Babandede, has cautioned that any officer caught collecting bribes from travelers at the borders, especially those without valid travel documents, will be dismissed.

He gave the warning, while commissioning the Mazanya Forward Operation base in Jibiya, Katsina State. He confirmed that there were reports that some officers were taking money from travelers who do not possess their complete papers and allow them to cross the borders, adding: “Therefore, any officer caught in the act will be dismissed immediately.”

Babandede pointed out that illegal migrants pose serious security threat to the country, especially to border communities, stating, “that is why officers must ensure that travelers coning in or leaving the country should be fully certified.”He advised the officers to work with border communities to fish out illegal migrants, who may be hiding in their domains to perpetrate crimes and other illegal activities.
