Imo APC to adopt direct primaries in governorship

Related

The Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Chapter (APC) has adopted the indirect mode of primaries for all elective positions in the party ahead of the 2019 general election.

The decision taken by the Imo state chapter of the party is at odds with the stance adopted by the National Executive Council of APC in Abuja.

The NEC, last week, had declared: “We wish to make the following clarifications on resolutions on mode of primary election. Primary elections into all elective offices shall be by direct primaries.

NEC resolved to adopt direct primaries for the nomination of the presidential candidate and all other primaries.”

The decision of the Imo state chapter of the party follows the decisions of several other states to adopt the indirect primaries in defiance of the National body. Nasarawa, Plateau, Ogun, Borno, Kogi, Ondo, Kebbi, Bauchi and Kaduna chapters of the APC have shown their preference for the indirect primaries.

In the Imo State Emergency Council meeting held on Thursday morning, the Imo APC state chairman, Dan Nwafor, also declared that membership revalidation exercise of the party had commenced. The meeting had the Chief of Staff to the Imo state governor, Uche Nwosu in attendance. Nwosu is favoured by current Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, to replace him as governor. Okorocha was unavailable for the meeting but was represented by the Speaker of the Imo state House of Assembly, Mr Acho Ihim.
