Imo Assembly seeks probe of monarchs’ murder

Imo State House of Assembly has condemned and called for probe into the gruesome murder of two traditional rulers in the state by yet-to-be-identified gunmen.

Eze Anayochukwu Durueburuo, the Obi II of Okwudor, and Eze Samson Osunwa, the Ohanyereugo I of Ihebinowerre, both from Njaba Council, were killed by gunmen who invaded their meeting at Nnenasaa, recently.

Following the motion on matters of urgent importance moved by the lawmaker representing the area, Uju Onwudiwe, the house urged Governor Hope Uzodimma “to urgently engage the security agents to apprehend perpetrators of the dastardly act, to serve the course of justice.”

It also resolved that the Njaba incident be fully investigated with a view to identifying the cause.

The Assembly urged the executive to support those who sustained injury during the attack in treatment and rehabilitation, as well as assist the affected families and communities to organise a befitting burial for the fallen monarchs.

MEANWHILE, Governor Uzodimma has appointed a 113-member Imo Elders’ Council.

According to a statement issued yesterday by the Permanent Secretary, Political Affairs Bureau, Office of the Secretary to the Government of Imo State (SGI), J. O. Njoku, the Obi of Obinugwu (Orlu), Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, will chair the council, with Lemmy Akakem as the deputy, while a former Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Maxwel Duru, is the secretary.

Former governors Achike Udenwa, Ikedi Ohakim and Emeka Ihedioha as well as the House of Assembly Speaker, Paul Emeziem, and Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, made the list.

Uzodimma also appointed former deputy governors, Dr. Douglas Acholonu, Ebere Udeagu, Dr. Ada Okwuonu, as members.

Former and serving ministers, senators and ambassadors, who were also appointed, include Emeka Nwajiuba, Viola Onwuliri, Chinwe Obaji, Kema Chikwe and Greg Mbadiwe made the list along with Senator Chris Anyanwu (Imo East) and Sylvester Anyanwu.

Chikwe’s husband, Herbert, the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, George Obiozor, Amb. Greg Mbadiwe and Sen. Ifeanyi Araraume were also listed.
