Imo pensioners mark retirees day
Reject partial payment of arrears
Retired workers in Imo State under the aegis of Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) will mark the Retirees Day today.
Meanwhile, the pensioners have rejected the decision by the state government to pay them 40 per cent of the monthly arrears.
The Imo State chairman of the NUP, Gideon Ezeji, who disclosed this in Owerri said the event was part of activities to draw the attention of the public to the non-payment of pension by the government for about 76 months.
In a reaction, the Commissioner for Information, Obinna Nsirim, in an interview said the decision to pay retirees 40 per cent was better than nothing.
According to Ezeji: “The reason for the demonstration is to draw public attention over continued punishment of pensioners and to clearly condemn the move by Governor Rochas Okorocha to force retirees to sign off 60 per cent of their arrears of pensions and gratuities owed them.
