The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has drawn vital operational lessons from the bye-elections conducted in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The Commission’s Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, made this known on Saturday while presiding over operations at INEC’s National Situation Room at its headquarters in Abuja.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser, Adedayo Oketola, in Abuja.

The Commission conducted four legislative bye-elections in Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State, Dawakin Kudu State Constituency of Kano State, Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies of Bauchi State, and Udu State Constituency of Delta State.

Amupitan described the elections as crucial operational benchmarks for testing the nation’s electoral infrastructure and preparing for the 2027 General Election.

He said no electoral contest should be regarded as trivial or routine, noting that every election provided an opportunity for the Commission to assess and improve its processes.

“These four bye-elections provide indispensable operational lessons for the Commission as we systematically chart our roadmap toward the 2027 General Election,” he said.

According to him, the exercises allowed INEC to audit its logistics framework, stress-test its technological deployment and evaluate administrative readiness in the field.

The INEC chairman, accompanied by National Commissioners and senior management officials, monitored reports from the field as voting activities progressed.

He said operational bottlenecks encountered before polling were identified and resolved promptly.

Amupitan said: “Our primary mandate in the Situation Room is monitoring and proactive crisis resolution.

“Whatever administrative or field challenges arose before the day of the elections, the Commission was able to nip them in the bud effectively.

“We remain committed to refining our processes so that every subsequent exercise reflects higher standards of efficiency and public confidence.”

Amupitan commended members of the Situation Room, particularly the technical team, for ensuring seamless monitoring of the multi-state elections and assessing field performance.
