INEC loses four officials in Kogi, Edo
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday announced the death of four of its staff in Kogi and Edo states in road accidents last week.
While three of the officials died in Kogi, one died in Edo as two survived road accidents in Katsina State during the by- election held last weekend.
According to the commission, “one election duty staff also suffered a head injury following attack by hoodlums who destroyed election materials at a polling unit in Kwara State.”INEC said it was deeply saddened by the incidents, promising to work with the security agencies to ensure the arrest and prosecution of those involved in the attack.
At a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the commission’s headquarters, INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmud Yakubu, who disclosed the incidents, said the commission remained committed to monitoring the campaigns pursuant to its statutory mandate and to ensure compliance with the extant laws and regulations.
