What would have resulted in a major fire disaster was averted yesterday in the Ajah area of Lagos after a utility jeep crashed into a gas station. The name of the driver was not given. Sources said the accident occurred due to overspeeding.

A statement by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Nosa Okunbor, said no life was lost, adding that the timely arrival of rescue workers including officials of the LASEMA Response Team (LRT) saved the situation.

He said: “Upon arrival, the LRT discovered that a Nissan FX35 Infiniti Jeep with registration number EPE 877 JD was involved in an incident with two unidentified motorcycles at the location.

“Further investigations revealed that the incident occurred as a result of overspeeding by the driver of the Infinity Jeep who lost control of the wheel while attempting to avoid collision with two unidentified commercial motorcyclists, before crashing into a mini gas station (Climate Gas Hub) by the roadside, leading to product leakage in the process.

“No casualties nor injuries were recorded at the scene. The collaborating emergency responders blanketed the affected area to prevent any secondary incident. The accident vehicle has been successfully moved away from the incident scene. The leakage was subsequently repaired by the engineer at the gas station, with no further threats to residents and other road users.”
