IPC seeks fresh probe, prosecution of masterminds of Dele Giwa’s assassination

Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu

Doctor reveals final moments, last words of late journalist

The International Press Centre (IPC) has called for renewed investigations and accountability in the unresolved assassination of founding Editor-in-Chief of Newswatch magazine, Dele Giwa.

According to a statement by the Executive Director of IPC, Lanre Arogundade, which was made available to newsmen by the Press Freedom Officer, IPC-SPJ Hub, Melody Akinjiyan, the continued failure to bring the case to a credible conclusion served as an indictment of Nigeria’s commitment to justice, accountability and the protection of journalists.

ALSO, the Media Rights Agenda (MRA) has called on the Federal Government to comply with and fully implement the judicial order directing it to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing of the journalist and prosecute those responsible.

The organisation described the government’s failure to bring the case to a conclusive resolution four decades later as a shameful reminder of the entrenched culture of impunity for attacks against journalists in Nigeria.

MRA’s Deputy Executive Director, Ayode Longe, therefore, called on the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and all other relevant authorities to provide a clear account of the steps taken to implement the court’s order, including the status of the investigation, the investigative measures undertaken and the plans for pursuing prosecution where the evidence and applicable law warrant it.

Adedeji, while speaking yesterday, during the launch of ‘Dele Giwa’s Granite Journalism’ at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Lagos, said the late journalist did not want to die and was determined to survive his injuries.
