IPCSL urges INEC to boost election security amid tension

The International Police Chaplain Sustainable Development and Law Enforcement, Inc. (IPCSL), USA, on Thursday called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to boost its security strategies to prevent unnecessary tension and security concerns during elections.

Following the organisation’s observation of the 2024 Edo State off-cycle gubernatorial election, the IPCSL said that these measures are crucial for promoting greater public awareness and participation in the democratic process.

The Africa Director/Commander-in-Chief of IPCSL’s mission to Edo State, Amb. Colonel Blessing Akinlosotu, made this appeal in Abuja at a press briefing, urging political actors and candidates to use legal channels to resolve disputes, thereby preserving social peace.

He said: “Our mission team recommends a thorough review of electoral laws to address incidents that require stronger legislative frameworks.”

The mission stressed the need for intensified voter education and mass sensitisation efforts, which should be undertaken not only by INEC but also by political parties.

IPCSL recommended ongoing engagement between INEC, political parties, and civil society organisations to reinforce Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Akinlosotu added, “Civil society plays a pivotal role in maintaining social cohesion, particularly during elections. Their efforts in civic education and public sensitisation are essential for fostering inclusive participation in these vital democratic exercises.”

“Minimal incidents and complaints were reported at polling units and collation centres, with irregularities accounting for less than 5% of the overall process.”

“IPCSL confirmed that these irregularities did not warrant any calls for the cancellation of the election but encouraged INEC, security agencies, and political actors to collaborate more closely for even better outcomes in future elections.”

In its preliminary report, the IPCSL mission observed that the 2024 Edo State gubernatorial election was largely peaceful, transparent, credible, and successful.

The IPCSL mission commended the Nigerian people, security agencies, the Edo State government, political parties, and all stakeholders for creating a conducive environment for a successful election.

The mission also praised the demonstration of patriotism and democratic values and urged all parties to continue working towards maintaining peace and stability in Nigeria’s political landscape.

IPCSL acknowledged the positive collaboration between international missions and commended the quality of discussions held with national actors.
