Israeli Embassy in Nigeria resumes diplomatic operations

The Embassy of Israel in Nigeria yesterday re-opened after a two-day closure of all Israeli embassies and consulates following a strike by diplomats and military attaches over allowances.

Israeli embassies and consulates around the world closed down on Wednesday as diplomats and military attachés went on strike over a dispute with the Finance Ministry.

The Isreali consulate in Atlanta, US shared the closure notice on its verified Twitter handle, Israel in Atlanta @IsraelAtlanta, on Wednesday, saying the closure was due to decision of the Israeli Ministry of Finance to breach the understandings that were agreed upon saying the agreement was signed by the Director-General of the Ministry of Finance on July 21, 2019 and to apply a one-sided procedure that alters protocol that had been in place for several decades.

It was reported that the embassy shut down diplomatic operations in Abuja from Wednesday, October 30 to Thursday, October 31. The closure came into effect at 1 a.m on Wednesday morning Israel time.

The strike, coordinated by the Foreign Ministry, the Defence Ministry and the Histadrut Labor Federation, came after the Treasury reportedly backtracked on previous understandings and said it would force the envoys to pay back thousands of dollars that they had been reimbursed for expenses.
