More than 51,000 film lovers filled Tafawa Balewa Square over the weekend for a record-breaking outdoor screening of Black Market the movie, an ambitious premiere backed by Johnnie Walker Blonde as the official drinks partner.

Directed by Nigerian filmmaker and cinematographer Nora Awolowo, the massive gathering served as a verified attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a single movie premiere, turning the historic Lagos arena into a focal point for regional cinema. 

The event marked a major operational and artistic milestone for Awolowo, who transitioned from mobile filmmaking to directing large-scale cinematic productions. The record attempt drew thousands of young film lovers, industry stakeholders, and culture enthusiasts to the square, highlighting the growing scale and audience pull of independent Nigerian cinema.

By filling one of the city’s largest public venues, the premiere demonstrated the commercial and cultural viability of hosting large-format public cinema events in Lagos.
