Kalu, Obi congratulate new Ohanaeze President-General
Urge new leadership to promote national unity
Former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North Senatorial Zone, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, and the Labour Party (LP)Presidential candidate in the 2023 elections have congratulated John Azuta-Mbata on his emergence as President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
The election, held on Friday at the Old Government Lodge in Enugu, saw delegates from Rivers State unanimously nominating Azuta-Mbata for the position. His emergence follows the zoning of the role to Rivers State after the passing of Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who represented Imo State.
Azuta-Mbata, the first Ikwerre native to serve as Rivers East Senator under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, assumes leadership at a pivotal moment for the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation.
He is also the first Rivers native to head Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
Kalu, in a statement yesterday said that he was confident that Azuta-Mbata would bring his wealth of experience into the role.
On his part, Obi has admonished the newly elected leadership of Ohanaeze to work towards peace and unity of the nation. Writing on his X handle in a congratulatory message to the executive members, Obi urged them to leverage their position, which shows the people’s confidence in them, to strengthen the Igbo family and unite the country.
“On behalf of my family and the Obidient movement, I congratulate the newly elected President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, John Azuta-Mbata; the Deputy President-General, Prince Okey Nwadinobi; the Secretary-General, Emeka Sibeudu, and other newly elected executive members, on their emergence as leaders of the noble organisation.
“Their emergence of the leaders of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the umbrella body that unites the Igbo people, underscores the level of confidence and hope the people have in their leadership ability and their commitment to the development of the region and the nation in general.
“I pray that they will leverage their new offices to continue to work for the peace and unity of our nation and contribute immeasurably to ideas that will drive development, peace, and progress among the people.”
