Kano Assembly clears Garo’s nomination as Deputy Governor

Kano State House of Assembly has confirmed former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Murtala Sule Garo, as Deputy Governor.

Garo was cleared after successfully passing the screening process and security checks conducted by the House committee, headed by the Deputy Speaker, and was subsequently approved during plenary on Monday.

Presenting the committee’s report earlier, the Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Bello, stated that Garo’s nomination followed the resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.

He explained that the screening exercise was conducted in line with Section 191(3)(c) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which empowers the Assembly to approve a nominee in the event of a vacancy.

According to Bello, the nominee underwent a comprehensive screening process, including an extensive question-and-answer session covering his educational background, professional experience, understanding of governance, and vision for the state.

His credentials were also thoroughly verified.
He added that Garo demonstrated a clear understanding of the responsibilities of the office and presented a workable vision to support the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in delivering on its mandate.

The Deputy Speaker told the plenary that the committee therefore deemed it fit to recommend Garo as Deputy Governor of Kano State.

The Assembly also reaffirmed its commitment to working with the executive arm to promote good governance, accountability, and the overall development of the state.

Governor Yusuf had earlier transmitted Garo’s name to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as Deputy Governor. According to the Governor, Garo’s nomination is in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the Governor to nominate a Deputy Governor where a vacancy exists.

“The position became vacant following the voluntary resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Comrade Abdussalam Gwarzo, on March 27, 2026. Following wide consultations with key stakeholders, the Governor has requested the Assembly to grant the necessary approval for Garo’s nomination,” the statement read.

The 48-year-old Murtala Sule Garo is a seasoned political administrator with over two decades of service in both elective and appointed positions.

He has served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor, and elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government.

He also served as Chairman of ALGON Kano, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Deputy Governorship candidate of the APC in the 2023 general elections.
