Kano State government, yesterday, dragged Geng Quangrong, a Chinese resident in the state before the State High court for alleged murder of his girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani Buhari.
Ummukulsum was allegedly stabbed to death by Quangrong in her Kabuga quarters in Kano city for unconfirmed reasons.
Quangrong was arraigned before Justice Sanusi Ado Ma’aji of Kano High Court by the state ministry of Justice on one-count charge of culpable homicide punishable by death sentence under section 221 penal code of Kano State.
However, the trial was stalled because the accused person sought time to produce legal representation. Without raising objection to the defendant’s request, the prosecution counsel and the State Attorney General, Barrister Musa Abdullahi Lawan, prayed the court to adjourn the matter to enable the defendant to consult his lawyer.
Justice Ma,aji, subsequently, adjourned the matter to October 4, 2022 for arraignment and ordered the prosecution to furnish the defendant’s lawyer with the court process.
Recall that the police had charged the Chinese national before a Senior Magistrate’s court for similar charge. But the state counsel raised an objection for further prosecution, insisting that the lower court lack jurisdiction to hear such a criminal suit.
Senior Magistrate Ciroma, then fixed October 13, 2022 for further mention of the case.
