Four additional victims of an attack on a mosque at Abasawa village in the Gezawa local government area of Kano State were confirmed dead on Tuesday, raising the death toll to 21.

The attack by 38-year-old Shafi’u Abubakar left a devastating memory of locals who lost family, friends, and loved ones.

A resident of the village, Malam Hamisu Abasawa who confirmed the sad development revealed that only four victims out of the 25 affected were left with critical burns at the hospital.

According to him, “We have so far lost 21 persons while we are left with only four other patients in the hospital out of which are three youths and one adult.”

Abubakar reportedly sprayed the mosque area with petrol, locked the doors, and set the mosque on fire while the worshippers were observing their morning prayers (Subhi prayers). More than 30 worshippers were inside the mosque at the time.

The suspect has been arraigned before an upper Shariah court presided over by Halhalatu Zakariya and remanded in the correctional facility until 31st May 2024, the adjourned date.

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has vowed to sign the death warrant of Abubakar if convicted by the court to serve as deterrent of his unwholesome act.
