The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old man, Abubakar Musa, over the alleged ritual desecration of a copy of the Holy Qur’an in Zuru Local Government Area of the state.

 

The suspect, who hails from Rafin Mose Village in Zuru LGA, was arrested in connection with allegations bordering on criminal conspiracy, abuse of religious books, use of spells and hypnosis, and conduct capable of inciting public disturbance.

 

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, the incident occurred on August 9, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m. in the Zango area of Zuru.

 

Police said preliminary investigations indicated that Musa allegedly conspired with two other suspects identified as Rabi’u Tela and Hamza Zango, who are currently at large, to dig a pit inside the room of one Zarau Hassan and bury several items, including a copy of the Holy Qur’an.

 

Other items allegedly buried in the pit included semen, white and red kolanuts, underwear, dead animals, and other fetish objects.

 

The police said the alleged act was intended to make Zarau Hassan more submissive to her husband, Rabi’u Tela.

 

The Command added that the circumstances surrounding the incident were capable of provoking a breach of peace and causing tension among members of the Muslim community in the area.

 

Usman said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the two fleeing suspects, while Abubakar Musa remained in police custody pending the conclusion of investigations.

 

He added that the suspect would be charged to court once investigations were completed.

 

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Kebbi State, Umar Hadejia, condemned the alleged act and warned against actions capable of undermining religious harmony and public peace.

 

“The Command will deal decisively, within the ambit of the law, with individuals whose actions threaten religious harmony, public order, and peaceful coexistence,” the commissioner said.

 

The police appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could assist in the arrest of the remaining suspects and the successful prosecution of the case.
