‘Lack of welfare services cause of illegal detention centres’

The Adamawa Muslim Council has identified lack of efficient social welfare services as the major factor for the existence of illegal and local rehabilitation centres in the North.

The Adamawa Muslim Council has identified lack of efficient social welfare services as the major factor for the existence of illegal and local rehabilitation centres in the North.

Chairman of the council, Gambo Jika, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Yola.

Jika attributed the rise of illegal detention centres in the region to the collapse of government social welfare service centres.

He noted that the absent and poor condition of services of remand homes and psychiatric hospitals was also responsible for the establishment of traditional corrective and mad people rehabilitation homes in many states in the region.

He said the council was disturbed by the increasing cases of child and drugs abuses as wee as human trafficking in Adamawa.
