The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has unveiled Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as its governorship candidate for the 2027 general election following the party’s primary conducted on Thursday.

Hamzat’s emergence signals a major political transition within the ruling party in Lagos, as party stakeholders rallied behind the deputy governor in what observers described as a largely coordinated and consensus-driven process.

The primary, held in Lagos, drew top APC leaders, elected officials, delegates, and party faithful from across the state, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other influential figures in attendance.

Announcing the outcome of the exercise, Chairman of the APC National Governorship Election Committee, Gen. Jon Temlong (retd.), said Hamzat satisfied all constitutional and procedural requirements guiding the primary.

According to him, the exercise was conducted in line with the party’s internal democratic framework and reflected the collective position of APC members in the state.

Hamzat, while addressing party supporters after his emergence, expressed appreciation to APC leaders and delegates for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to sustain the developmental strides of the current administration if elected governor in 2027.

He also acknowledged Governor Sanwo-Olu and party stakeholders for their support throughout the process, describing the outcome as a victory for party unity and continuity.

Political analysts say Hamzat’s emergence further consolidates his standing within the Lagos political structure, especially after weeks of endorsements and consultations among influential blocs within the APC.

Before the primary, key stakeholders, including members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), had reportedly thrown their weight behind the deputy governor, strengthening speculation that the party was moving toward a consensus arrangement ahead of the contest.

The development now sets the stage for what is expected to be an intense build-up to the 2027 governorship election in Nigeria’s commercial capital, with the APC seeking to retain its long-standing dominance in Lagos politics.
